Dr. Matthew Buman, Dr. Stephanie Marita Carpenter
Dr. Matthew Buman and Dr. Stephanie Marita Carpenter at the Arizona State University College of Health Solutions are seeking PhD students for Fall 2024. Applications are now being accepted and will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until March 2024.
Drs. Buman and Carpenter use precision health approaches that consider and adapt to the needs and interests of individuals, including the use of adaptive and optimization research designs and the use of mobile health (mHealth) technologies. Dr. Buman is a Professor of Exercise and Movement Sciences at the ASU College of Health Solutions. His research interest focuses on the dynamic interplay of behaviors across the 24 hours – sleep, sedentary behavior (ie., sitting), and physical activity and how collectively these behaviors contribution to disease prevention and health promotion. The majority of his work focuses on the application of personal technologies (i.e., smartphones, wearables) to promote behavior change, the use of adaptive designs to optimize health outcomes, and the dissemination and implementation of mHealth interventions. Dr. Carpenter is an Assistant Professor of Population Health at the ASU College of Health Solutions. She studies engagement and emotions, and their impact on health behaviors, using methods that adapt to the unique needs of the individual. Current research projects use mixed methodological approaches to optimize digital health interventions, including mobile health (mHealth) just-in-time adaptive interventions that adapt in real-time to provide the right kind of support at the right time. Dr. Carpenter incorporates wearables and ecological momentary assessment in her research, with health behavior change outcomes of interest including substance use, physical activity, weight loss, stress regulation, and more.
