My wife and I both received fully funded PhD offers from the same university for Fall 2024. However, I also received an offer from a top-ranked university (within the top 100 according to the US News Best Global University Ranking).
In both universities, my research area is similar. At my wife's university, the professor is a well-established full professor with a strong profile. At the top-ranked university, the professor is an associate professor, but the university is #1 in my field and the research group is highly active.
Any advice on what to do? We're torn! Should we prioritize being together at the same school or should I pursue the top-ranked program? The distance between the two universities is approximately 7 hours by flight.
If experienced members of this community could offer their insights, it would be incredibly helpful in making this decision.
Hey! Can I just say how lucky you are to have this chance to be at the same university as your partner? I spent 5 years in USA for my PhD completely alone, and trust me, long distance is tough. You won't realize how much you appreciate being together until you're apart. This is an amazing opportunity to be happy as a couple. Pls consider choosing the same university - life is short, and you deserve to make the most of this time together ^ _ ^
Getting into the same university is fantastic. The most important thing during your phd is your well-being. This includes your relationship with your spouse and having a stable life. Having your wife by your side will be a tremendous source of emotional support, which is crucial for success in such a demanding program. Plus, sharing one apartment and maybe a car saves a ton of money!
