Position Description

The funded PhD position in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Rhode Island focuses on applying advanced invasive and non-invasive subsurface imaging techniques for geotechnical dynamic site characterization. The position will be supervised by Dr. Aser Abbas, starting in Fall 2025.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering or a related field.
  • Eligibility to pursue a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a geotechnical focus at the University of Rhode Island.
  • Programming experience in any language.
  • Capability to perform field-based research.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C#.
  • Experience with machine learning or deep learning algorithms for subsurface data analysis.
  • Proven ability to deliver on research projects.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing.
  • Experience in numerical modeling.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methods.
