Assistantship | PhD | Complex Engineering Systems Lab | Stevens Institute of Technology | Hoboken, New Jersey, USA

This is a fully funded Ph.D. position available in the Department of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology, starting Fall 2025. The role involves joining Professor Hao Chen’s Complex Engineering Systems Lab to conduct advanced research in quantum computing for systems engineering and space systems engineering.

Qualifications:
Candidates should have a background in industrial & systems engineering, statistics physics, applied mathematics, aerospace engineering, or mechanical engineering, and must demonstrate a strong passion for space and/or quantum computing research.

Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in related fields is preferred.

Research Topics/Area:
The research focuses on:

  • Quantum computing for systems engineering
  • Space systems engineering, including space logistics, space mission planning to the moon and Mars, space resource utilization, in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing, as well as space system design
    Additional research applications include complex engineered systems design and space healthcare (e.g., human factors and behavioral performance).

Project Details:
Projects encompass fundamental research in complex systems with a particular emphasis on engineered systems in space or extreme environments. Detailed research topics include space system design (covering space logistics, resource utilization, in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing), quantum computing applications for complex engineered systems, and explorations into space healthcare.

Funding:
The Ph.D. position is fully funded.
