PhD Opening | Computational Multiphase Flows | San Diego State University | San Diego, California, USA | 2024

Prof. Amneet Pal S. Bhalla

Two five-year Ph.D. positions starting in mid-August 2024 are available in the Computational Fluid Dynamics and Flow Physics laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at San Diego State University (SDSU), San Diego, California, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Amneet Pal S. Bhalla and a co-advisor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). In addition to covering tuition fees, students receive health insurance and a monthly stipend.

We welcome talented, self-motivated candidates with a solid computational fluid dynamics and numerical methods background. Experience in programming languages like C and C++ is a strength. Students are expected to work with and gain proficiency in large-scale computer programming and productivity tools (e.g., C, C++, Fortran, Python, MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, Git, bash scripting, LaTeX) while working on their doctoral projects.

The students will work on multiphase flow code development in IBAMR  (https://github.com/IBAMR/IBAMR) with applications related to metal additive manufacturing and wave energy conversion. PhD applications are typically due by December 15. SDSU’s Ph.D. program is jointly offered with UC San Diego (UCSD), and students receive degrees from both schools. Furthermore, they can access both campuses’ facilities (graduate classes, library, career fairs, seminars).

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in a related area (e.g., mechanical / Aerospace/Chemical Engineering) and an interest in pursuing a research career.
  • Good fundamental understanding of fluid mecahnics and numerical methods (e.g., finite volume schemes).
  • Strong interest in large-scale programming.
  • English: GRE (Quantitative 159; Verbal 153; Ana.ly tical Writing: 4.0) AND fulfill either TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.5, or PTE 58 for applicants who did not earn a degree from an English-speaking university.
