PhD Opening | Electrical and Computer Engineering | University of Queensland at Brisbane | Brisbane, USA | Fall 2024

Dr. Tapan Saha

We have a PhD scholarship available at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, for the project below to start in 2024. If you know anyone with the right skills and education, please ask them to apply online.

More variable renewable energy-based generators (VREGs) are integrated into the electricity grid each year. However, VREGs produce oscillations (periodic energy exchange across system components), which cause grid instability and are a roadblock for the growth of renewable energy. Such oscillations result in reduced VREG production or commissioning delays, which place technical and financial pressure on renewable generators. This project will facilitate a researcher network, from the USA, the UK, India, and industry partner Iberdrola Australia, developing innovative methods to identify oscillation sources based on the measurement from VREGs to accelerate the integration of renewables into the electricity grid, paving the way for Australia to reach net zero by 2050.

Qualification

Your application will be assessed on a competitive basis.

We take into account your:

  • previous academic record
  • publication record
  • honours and awards
  • employment history

A working knowledge of hardware in loop experiments would be of benefit to someone working on this project.

You will demonstrate academic achievement in the field/s of power systems stability and dynamics with solid knowledge in power electronics-based generators and the potential for scholastic success.

A background or knowledge of power system dynamics and experience with PSS/E and PSCAD tools is highly desirable.

Funding

This project is supported by the Research project scholarship.

This scholarship includes:

  • living stipend of $33,641 per annum tax free (2024 rate), indexed annually
  • tuition fees covered
  • single overseas student health cover (OSHC) for international students.
